A NEWLY-QUALIFIED boat skipper turned lakeside lifeguard as he saved a drowning woman in Windermere.

Dan Nield, who works for Windermere Lake Cruises, was locking up at Bowness pier on Wednesday night when he was alerted to a woman struggling in the water.

Mr Nield, who dived into the icy waters fully clothed, found the woman several feet under the surface and got her to the shore.

The Windermere 23-year-old, who has been branded Baywatch hero' by colleagues, said: "I didn't think about what I did, I just did it. She was cold and pale and drowning." Police said the Windermere woman was in her mid 30s and was taken to Westmorland General Hospital at Kendal for treatment.
