EDEN Faster the company bringing broadband to some to the most remote areas of the county has taken premises in Appleby's Business Centre.
The system which will link up isolated areas with the latest internet access will use radio waves and will enable people in Appleby, Kirkby Stephen and surrounding areas to have fast, constant links with the world wide web.
Chairman of Appleby Chamber of Trade Carl Bendalow said: "This is exciting news for businesses in the area. Eden Fast are setting up a training centre for broadband technology at the Appleby Business Centre."
Appleby Chamber of Trade has secured an £18,000 grant from the North Pennines Leader Plus Project to produce a multi-media guide for the area with palm held computers.
Carl explained: "The small hand held computer knows where it is using the satellite-based Global Positioning System and, as you walk around the tour of the town, it will provide information via the touch sensitive screen. We hope to have our equipment available for hire from the Tourist Information Centre in Appleby this summer."
