CUMBRIA has one of the highest proportion of people working from home in the country, according to a new study based on the 2001 Census.
Some 12 per cent of the county's workforce 26,396 people - work mainly at or from home, compared with the national average of 9.2 per cent. Only North Yorkshire, Somerset, Cornwall and the Isle of Scilly have a higher percentage of home-based workers, said the GMB union, which commissioned the research.
Increased use of new technology like laptop computers, email and mobile phones has resulted in more home workers, the survey concluded.
