SIR, Your article (April 18) about sexist stereotypes at Kendal Rugby Club may be accurate with regard to comments made at that meeting.
When people meet socially they don't always act or speak in a politically correct manner. However, the impression given does not reflect the work being done to encourage young people of both sexes to play and enjoy rugby. On June 28 Kendal will host the Cumbria Youth Games 2003.
Kendal Rugby Club will be involved in organising the rugby for those games. The events will be a mixed tag rugby competition for primary school children and a rugby competition for secondary school girls. Lack of funding in the past and the huge cost of supporting a first team, which plays in the national leagues, has left little spare resources for development of women's rugby in Kendal. Times are changing and these present efforts will bear fruit in the future. In the meantime, Kendal RUFC is a women-friendlyclub which respects and values the participation of women in rugby.
