KENDAL'S rugby players may have had to swallow relegation this season but they cut the ice when helping to propel Cumbria to a 24-20 victory over Hertfordshire in the County Championships at Aspatria's Bower Park on Saturday.
Operating at full back rather than the centre spot he fills for his club, Martin Armstrong took the man of the match plaudits. And two of his team-mates, Keith Robinson and Ian Voortman - soon to join Sedgley Park - made crucial contributions with second-half tries to send Cumbria into the next round before Orrell's Paul Newton added another to wrap up the victory.
In the first half, Aspatria winger Alex Walton opened the scoring with a try but Hertfordshire came back with two tries to take a first-half lead that was erased after the break.
Cumbria now go to play Cheshire at Chester this Saturday.
