APPLEBY FC are pinning their hopes of lifting some silverware this season on beating Sedbergh Wanderers in next Monday's Westmorland League High Sheriff's Cup final at Kirkby Stephen (6.45pm kick-off).
Appleby's championship bid finally came unstuck last Thursday when a 2-0 defeat by Carleton Rovers put them out of the reckoning for their first-ever first division title.
Jock Nugent's disappointed side then crashed 8-0 on Saturday to defending champions Wetheriggs United after losing keeper Paul Crawford through injury, forward Neil Dean taking over as they turned round 2-0 down.
Wetheriggs fired in six more goals to wrap up victory in their final fixture, which enabled them to pip long-time leaders Coniston on goal difference and take trophy for the third successive season.
