Interpol's debut disc has been described as the return of new wave and the new Joy Division and so, on first hearing, it's hard to look past the obvious traces of influence. Highlights include Obstacle 1' and Stella Was a Diver', channelling the band's good taste in music without relying on it to substitute for decent songwriting. This isn't an album of genius by any means, but it is refreshing, well written and somehow embodies a quality of desperation and passion not heard for some time.

That's probably the biggest compliment I could ever give this album.
