Class records fall to Broughton drivers
Last Saturday's Westmorland Motor Club Barbon Speed Hillclimb got underway in sharp showers that had competitors struggling to find grip and simply staying on the narrow, 890 yard, track was a challenge in itself. The day rapidly improved and for the afternoon's timed competitive runs, the course was in perfect condition for serious attack.
As the drivers started exploring the limits, there were a number of "offs" which led to some car damage but thankfully, no injuries. Times continued to fall and two new class records were set by two different Broughton-in-Furness drivers; in Class 13 by Ben Butterfield in a Dallara and in the pre-1953 Historic class 15 by Peter Speakman in the Chapman Mercury One - it must be something in the water!
FTD (Fastest Time of the Day) fell to maestro Graeme Wight Jr from Drumoak in Kincardineshire in his Gould GR51-V6 with a time of 21.05 seconds for his Round 5-winning run. His expected challenge to the outright record failed to materialise after a spin during his second Championship Round qualifying run. Tim Mason in another Gould took the Class 14 win with a time of 21.19 and the final runs of the day, as ever, had the record crowd on tenterhooks right up to the end with the top three being separated by just 0.16 of a second!
The organisers were delighted to have Colin Hilton, the Chief Executive of the MSA as their guest at the meeting. The MSA is the governing body for all motorsport in the UK (the equivalent of football's FA) and there was an opportunity for their premier to see this intriguing sport at particularly close-quarters when he was chauffeured, gently, up the hill in 31.49 seconds in a competitor's Caterham 7 sports car. At the end of meeting, he presented the major awards to the drivers before heading off to Oxfordshire for a further engagement.
