UPPER Eden Lions Club were amazed to learn that there could be as many as 900 Eden residents who have diabetes but do not know it.
John Angst, a member of Upper Eden Lions and a diabetic himself, said "It is amazing to think that there could be many people in this area suffering unnecessarily when, in most cases, they can control the condition either with medication or diet".
This Saturday, the Upper Eden Lions Club are once again offering free diabetes tests for all.
Upper Eden Lions member John Turner said: "We all felt that something should be done and so, with the help of Temple Sowerby surgery, we have set up a free screening session in Appleby. The session is open to anyone over 40 who is a little overweight or whose family has a history of diabetes".
Those with diabetes often suffer with tiredness, lethargy, excessive thirst, blurred vision and a constant need for the toilet. Sufferers often have rapid mood and weight changes. Anyone with these symptoms should go along to the Market Hall in Appleby between 11.30am and 2.30pm.
John Turner added: "This screening is completely free as all costs are being covered by Upper Eden Lions Club as part of our commitment to the local community. If we find even one diabetic then the screening will
have been a success. The screening takes a few minutes and could change your life so please come along".
