AFTER a six-year career in local politics, a Kendal councillor has slipped on the red robes to become town mayor.

Former deputy mayor Coun Tony Rothwell has stepped up to replace Coun Avril Dobson.

Coun Rothwell, who represents the Glebelands ward on both the district and town council, said he was "very happy" with his new role.

"I'm really looking forward to meeting people. I have served a good apprenticeship under Councillor Dobson which will stand me in good stead.

"It's not often you get an opportunity like this, it's a once in a lifetime chance," he said.

Kendal-born-and-bred Coun Rothwell was educated at Longlands School and spent 23-years working as a joiner for K Shoes.

The father-of-four said he saw the forthcoming big issues on the town's agenda as employment and affordable housing for young Kendalians.

"Our young people are leaving because they can't afford to live in Kendal.

"We need to attract higher paid jobs so people that want to can stay here. I'm very optimistic that the town will attract that kind of employment but unfortunately it all takes time.

"We also have to seriously consider the option of local-only housing for our young people," he said.

When the new mayor is not undertaking his political and civic duties, he winds down with a walk on the fells and a good book.

Coun Marilyn Molloy takes up the duty of deputy mayor.
