A MAJOR concert is to be staged in Lancaster as a tribute to one of the area's best-known musicians.

More than 100 performers will get together at St Peter's Cathedral, Lancaster on Sunday June 1, at 7.30pm for the concert in memory of Dr Gerry Doyle, former senior lecturer in music at St Martin's College.

The performance of Brahms's German Requiem and Vaughan Williams' Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis will mark the first anniversary of Dr Doyle's death.

Many of the singers and instrumentalists are former members of the choir and orchestra of the Classical Trust and the choirs of St Martin's College who took part in a similar concert in the same venue six years ago when Dr Doyle was conductor.

This time that role will be undertaken by his son Justin, who has just completed a stint as conductor-fellow with the BBC Singers. Other relatives, including his wife and daughter Julia are taking part.

"Several people had asked if we might do something of this sort," says Mrs Shirley Doyle. "The response has been wonderful".

Proceeds from the concert will go to Cancercare.
