LUNESDALE'S football season ended on a high note when, following a 7-0 drubbing of Kendal County, they defeated local rivals Appleby 5-2 in their final Westmorland League fixture.

Neither team was at full strength and the game was even. Appleby took an early lead, only for Lunesdale to equalise through Johnny Lowis and then take the lead with a powerful Craig Nelson header.

Appleby equalised from the penalty spot before half-time. But the second half saw Lunesdale take control and score two outstanding goals.

Warren Kinley finished off a slick passing movement with a fierce cross shot, for the third goal, and Darren Potter hit a powerful drive from the edge of the penalty area to end the scoring after Dave Moss took advantage of a goalkeeping error to score from close range.

Johnny Lowis's goal against Appleby, added to the five he netted in the previous match, took his season's total to 32, which makes him the league's leading scorer.

l Wetheriggs United completed a hat-trick of Talbot Insurance Westmorland League championship titles by thrashing Appleby 8-0.

Dan Broadley hit them with two quick goals went on to score six, taking his seasonal tally to 28.
