KIRKBY Stephen Grammar School is celebrating its students' success in a national maths competition.
The grammar school was among the 2,666 schools selected from 167,376 entries, to take part in this year's Business and ICT Visits UK Intermediate Maths Challenge targeted at the top third of pupils in Years 9, 10
and 11. The youngsters had to use mathematical techniques to solve non-standard problems. This year Kirkby Stephen Grammar School achieved four gold, one silver and seven bronze certificates. Mark Curr, Year 1, achieved the Best in School Award'. Craig Scott, Year 9, won through to the European Championships and he has since sat the paper for that competition.
Teacher Malcolm Raw said: "There were almost 3,000 UK participants this year and the average score was 61.7. Craig achieved 73, and has been awarded a Certificate of Merit which is given to the top 25%, an outstanding achievement."
