PUBLIC pressure has helped convince Lancashire County Council of the need for speed cameras and traffic-calming measures in Carnforth.

Town resident Kara Jackson, of Grosvenor Road, wrote to Morecambe and Lunesdale MP Geraldine Smith about motorists speeding past Carnforth County High School and Our Lady of Lourdes RC School, both of which are on Kellet Road in the town.

Mrs Jackson also raised a petition of more than 500 signatures calling on the LCC to do something to protect pupils at the schools from motorists travelling at high speed.

Graham Harding, director of LCC's Environment Directorate, responded to Mrs Jackson's concerns by writing back to Geraldine Smith saying: "I am sure she will be relieved that Kellet Road is likely to be installed with a speed camera. I hope you will be able to assure your constituent that the council is already considering measures which are designed to address the sort of speed-related issues she has brought to our attention."

Mr Harding also said Carnforth was in line for "gateway treatments" consisting of road markings flagging up the start of 30mph zones around the town. Kellet Road was likely to get "gateway treatments" as well as speed cameras, said Mr Harding, but added that LCC could not put a definite timescale on when the work might be done.
