VERONICA Waller, the well-known former NFU policy adviser, is making a welcome return to Cumbria agriculture as the part-time marketing officer of the Cumbria Fells and Dales Leader Programme.

Veronica started work earlier this month and is already working with a group of farmers on marketing Herdwick lamb. Veronica, who stepped down as NFU policy adviser for the North West region to have a baby last year, will also be helping other groups improve their prospects.

Veronica said: "We hope to reverse the current trend of falling income levels for farmers through improved marketing. A major theme of the project will be to make known the area's local products to a wider range of potential consumers. I will also be helping groups of producers with supply chain issues such as branding, quality control, distribution and traceability."

The European-funded Cumbria Fells and Dales Leader+ programme covers the whole of the Lake District and Cumbria south of the A66 and aims to add value to local products.
