ULVERSTON'S wacky Shetland pony racing event was backed by more than 1,000 fans at the weekend, writes Zoe Casson.

On Sunday, Ford Park field was transformed into a racing track to stage the second event of its kind organised by the Hearts of Oak Trust.

Spectators bet on six races, which included an appearance by the pantomime horses used in last week's racing event in Ulverston town centre.

A member of the trust Jennifer Snell said the Shetland pony racing had grown in size and popularity from when it was first launched last year.

"It was absolutely wonderful. We had a beautiful day weather wise, loads of fun and loads of laughs. There will be more of the same next year but even bigger and brighter."

All the proceeds are to go towards the cost of restoring the Hearts of Oak boat, which was the last vessel ever built in Ulverston in 1912. Last year the trust netted £520 from the racing but expect to beat it by more than £200 from Sunday's spectacular.

The group has to raise about £60,000 to restore the Hearts of Oak to its former glory.
