OYEZ OYEZ: The streets of Kendal could soon be ringing with the sound of a permanent town crier.

Over the latest bank holiday weekend the familiar red coat and three-cornered-hat made a high-profile come back as freelance town crier Michael Wilding made his voice heard in the town.

His one-off appearance was specially scheduled to announce the town's Medieval Market, but Mr Wilding said there was a chance Kendal could have a permanent town crier in the not so-distant future.

The idea - mooted by Kendal Town Council - could see Kendal have its own crier to announce special events and advertise up-and-coming attractions as well as attending civic functions.

Mr Wilding who has experience of crying all over the region

including events at Kirkby Lonsdale, Ulverston, Carlisle, Penrith and Appleby, said the secret of his success was having one of the loudest mouths in the business.

He said: "Its part of our heritage and our culture. It makes people think this is not just a town to come and shop in but to come and see. There is more about Kendal than shops in the main streets. There's such a lot of history here and we are right on the doorstep of the Lakes. It is about bringing that forward and making the most of."
