ACTIVITIES:
- PENSIONERS Day gets under way on Monday at Windermere Lake Cruises. Any pensioner permanently living in Cumbria or the boundaries of Lancaster City Council can sail at much-reduced fares. Sailings include Ambleside to Brockhole, a 45-minute island cruise from Bowness and an all-day Freedom Ticket for unlimited travel. Proof of residency must be provided. EVENTS:
- A HAWAIIAN theme night takes place at the Barrow Superbowl on Hollywood Park next Thursday from 7pm. Tickets include unlimited bowling on the alleys along with games and prizes. There is a DJ and a buffet. For details, call on 01229-820444.
EXHIBITIONS:
- CROQUE Morte, 2000, the work of former Turner Prize winner Douglas Gordon is on show at the Brewery Arts Centre, Kendal, until July 6.
- CHECK out the work of Josie Alexander, a self-taught ceramicist who builds garden vessels. Her sculptures are on display on Sunday at Moorfoot, Clifton, Penrith. Tel 01768 891464 for details.
- THE International Feltmaking Association continues its exhibition until July 9 inclusive at the Farfield Mills Arts and Heritage Centre, Garsdale Road, Sedbergh, from 10am every day.
GARDENS:
- SUMMERDALE House, Lupton, presents the Gardens Open for charity programme from 11am on Sunday. The event is part of the National Gardens Scheme.
- LAKE House at Capernwray invites members of the public to its open gardens on Sunday between 11am. The event will be opened by Lady Shuttleworth. Proceeds will go to CancerCare North Lancs and South Lakes.
MUSIC:
- THE sons and daughters of reggae star, Denroy Heritage, bring the genre into the 21st century at the Malt Room in The Brewery from 8.30pm tonight (Friday). Morgan Heritage is acclaimed for its "incredible musicianship" and "lyrical inspiration." Call 01539-725133 to book.
- BRIDGET Guest, Roy Wilcock and Stewart Hardy are at The Cross Keys Hotel, Milnthorpe, for a concert at 8pm tomorrow (Saturday) featuring music and songs from their new album Universal Chorus, along with other favourites. Expect traditional folk, gospel and shanty songs along with contemporary music. Accompanied by Stewart Hardy on the fiddle, he is a member of the internationally-known folk festival favourite, the John Wright Band.
SPORT:
- KENDAL Cricket Club are hosts to Chorley in the Northern Premier Cricket League tomorrow (Saturday), while Netherfield travel to play Blackpool (both 1pm start).
- ON SUNDAY, Netherfield entertain Castletown (from the Isle of Man) in the second round of the Thwaites Lancashire Cup (2pm).
- THE Bendrigg 10K road race and fun run take place tomorrow (Saturday) from Bendrigg Lodge, Old Hutton, near Kendal, at 2pm. Entries are being accepted on the day.
TALKS:
- REBECCA Stephens is at the Rheged Centre, Penrith, next Wednesday to give a talk about being the first British woman to climb Mount Everest. Tickets include entry into the Everest Top Of The World Exhibition. Book a seat by calling 01768-860005.
THEATRE:
- CHILDREN aged ten and upwards can enjoy a special adaptation of Alice Through the Looking Glass presented at the Brewery Arts Centre, Kendal, tonight (Friday) at 7.30pm. The joint production is presented by Theatre sans Frontieres and Benchtours who promise physical and visual theatre, set to an original score or recorded live music and song.
- A tour of Hollywood screenwriter's Wendy Hammond's Absence, a love story set at the close of the Second World War with a young American couple sharing their dream of happiness under the shadow of the cold war, continues at the Village Hall, Grasmere, tomorrow (Saturday) from 7.30pm. Tickets can be bought on the door.
WALKS:
- A VOLUNTARY warden guided walk, taking in the spectacular Aira Force via Gowbarrow Park gets under way from the National Trust Car Park at Aira Force, Glenridding. Participants are reminded that the grade is moderate and takes in eight miles and lasts for six hours. Meet at Hawkshead Information Centre at 10.30am next Wednesday.
- AN AFTERNOON With Beatrix Potter is promised on Wednesday at 12.25pm as an expert on the author takes visitors on a leisurely cruise across the lake where you will be met by a dedicated bus for the village of Near Sawrey. Tickets include return boat, return bus and afternoon tea. It starts at Bowness Bay Information Centre and more info on 015394 42895.
- Take in the thundering waterfalls of Skelwith and Colwith with a voluntary warden guided walk to Hodge Close Quarry. The eight-miler, which takes six hours, takes in Slater Bridge into Little Langdale returning by Elterwater and the Slate Finishing Works. Start at Silverthwaite National Trust Car Park, Skelwith Bridge, near Ambleside, from 10.30am. The June 12 event is free.
