EXCEPTIONAL improvements have been made at Furness College since its last inspection two years ago, according to an Ofsted report.

Inspectors identified a number of strengths at the further education college at Channel Side in Barrow, which offers a wide range of full and part-time courses, ranging from basic to Higher National Diploma level.

The 7,000-plus student college was praised for its good pass rates at GCSE level courses and "good progression" in most curriculum areas.

The college's strong links with local schools and employers were also highlighted as a major strength.

Teaching, learning and attainment were graded by inspectors in 92 sessions. The report said teaching was "good" or "better" in 70 per cent of the areas with fewer than five per cent being less than satisfactory.

During the inspection, from February 3 to 7, six of the 13 types of courses were inspected. Inspectors said the provision in engineering; information and communications technology; hospitality and catering; health; care; childcare; and counselling was good. In humanities, English, literacy and numeracy, it was satisfactory.

This compares with many areas being identified as unsatisfactory at the last inspection two years ago.

The report said: "Managers and staff share a clear sense of purpose and take pride in the improvements that have been made since the last inspection."

Director of curriculum and quality at the college Dr Brian McQuillin said: "If we go back a couple of years, then the college received quite a bad Ofsted. To improve so much in only two years is exceptional and it is down to the hard work of the staff."

Inspectors highlighted five areas at the college that need to be improved.

They included pass rates on level three courses, which are equivalent to A-level passes, guidance and support for part-time students and the consistency of recording and monitoring students' progress.
