If the thought of being stuck indoors this Christmas is driving you crazy, why not escape with the Ramblers' Association's Festival of Winter Walks (December 26 to January 3).
With more than 400 walks taking place across England, Scotland and Wales, it's a great antidote to festive overindulgence - a chance to escape the TV schedules and walk off all that Christmas pudding.
The walks, led by Ramblers members, are free and open to everyone. Many are short and at an easy-going pace, suitable for all the family.
The festival is also the perfect opportunity to kick-start your New Year's resolution to get fit and healthy in 2006. Winter is a favourite time for the British to don walking boots judging by the vast numbers who take part in the festival, which attracts more than 15,000 people yearly. The appeal of clear, crisp winter air; energy boosting walks and the chance to socialise with friends and family over the festive period has lured thousands away from the Christmas pudding and into the outdoors since it began seventeen years ago.
A poll conducted by the RA shows that getting fit and healthy is a big consideration for many when the New Year approaches. The answer lies in a healthy diet and a regular exercise programme and few activities beat walking for long term results. Medical research proves that regular walking can halve the chance of coronary heart disease; reduce blood pressure and cholesterol levels; it can help reduce weight and maintain weight loss; increase bone density and help fight osteoporosis as well as enhancing mental well being.
Ruth Wembridge, head of membership recruitment at the Ramblers' Association, said: "Christmas is a time for family, but it's easy to get fed up once the excitement is over and you're stuck inside with nothing to do but eat left-over turkey. Wrapping up warm and enjoying a brisk stroll in the fresh air is a great way of escaping that cooped-up feeling, while spending quality time with your family and friends away from the TV."
All who take part in a Festival walk and want to join the organisation will receive a 20% discount off membership. For full walks details please log onto our website at www.ramblers.org.uk/winterwalks
