THE company behind a £75 million scheme to redevelop the historic K Village site claims it will bring "enormous benefit" to the community after gaining the go-ahead this week.

At a packed South Lakeland District Council planning committee meeting, members gave Kendal Riverside Ltd planning permission to carry out the redevelopment of the former K Shoes factory on Lound Round in Kendal, reports James Williamson.

Speaking after the meeting, project director for Kendal Riverside John Drummond welcomed the committee's decision and claimed that a jobs boost, increased retail and catering facilities, 120 new apartments, new heritage centre and underground parking facilities would be good for Kendal.

n earlier application was blocked in September 2003, following a public inquiry after which a planning inspector concluded the development was too far from Kendal's main shopping area, and it was not clear how it would affect town centre vitality.
