OLDER people and their carers living in the Eden area will soon be able to look forward to a special midweek break thanks to a pioneering scheme.
Age Concern Eden has launched a pilot project which aims to give people aged 55 years and over, and their carers, a chance to socialise and try out new activities.
The project will be called The Midweek Break and will be available every Wednesday from 9.30am to 4.30pm for people living within a ten-mile radius of Appleby.
People living outside this area can also take part in the scheme but only with the go-ahead of a social worker.
Sue Maughan, Age Concern Eden's Day Care Services Manager, explained that the new service was a first for the Eden area. She said that it would provide a vital opportunity for older people, including those with mobility and health problems, to socialise.
"The opportunity to socialise, to join in activities and broaden our horizons is an essential element of our health and well-being and adds immeasurably to quality of life," she said.
"It is easy to forget that the opportunity to escape from their own four walls is denied to many people including those older people whose lives are restricted by health problems and poor mobility and those who care for them. The Midweek Break offers people the opportunity to meet others, enjoy a meal in company, join in activities and try new experiences either for a full or half day on either a regular or flexible basis," added Mrs Maughan.
Carers can also join with the activities offered by the scheme that could range from Tai Chi to china painting.
The service will cost £3.10 for each session and Age Concern can arrange transport for people living within a ten-mile radius of Appleby. Age Concern Eden is also seeking volunteers for the Midweek Break. If you want to help out or find out more about the scheme contact Sue Maughan on 01768 863 618.
