A below par performance from the Vale of Lune against second placed Winnington Park in North Two West resulted in their fourth successive league defeat.
Trailing 15-0 at half time the Vale played much better in the second half but were unable to press home a number of attacks against a well organised defence.
The hard working Lee Farnworth charged over for a try from a quickly taken tap penalty in the 52nd minute - but that was the only score the locals could muster despite pressing the home side for long periods.
A late penalty secured victory for the home side by 18-5.
On Saturday the Vale will be at home to Fleetwood in the first meeting between the two clubs at league level, kick off 2-15pm, and will be hoping to put behind them their recent dip in form.
