THE sounds of Haydn and Stravinsky will resound through a Lancaster theatre when the acclaimed Lancashire Sinfonietta returns to the city.

As part of the Lancaster International Concert Series and under the direction of Lyn Fletcher, leader of the Hall Orchestra, the Sinfonetta will perform their latest concert on Thursday.

Haydn's Symphony No.22 The Philosopher' gained its nickname due to the reflective character of the music. Haydn also makes great use of the cors anglais, which gives the score a sound quite unique among his symphonies And the Concerto in D for string orchestra is a vivid illustration of how Stravinsky could derive a whole work from the inspiration of one sound or harmony. Several ballets have been created using this score and the choreographer Jerome Robbins found the music terribly driven and compelled' and was inspired to convert it into a ballet of considerable ferocity.

The programme ends with another fabulous work for the Tippett centenary year, the Concerto for Double String Orchestra.

It takes place at the Great Hall of Lancaster University.
