AN AMBULANCE responding to an emergency call collided with a car, bringing a main route into Lancaster to a standstill on Monday.

The ambulance was heading towards the M6 motorway at 9.30pm when it collided with the front end of a red Peugeot 106 driven by a Heysham woman.

The ambulance, still with its blue lights flashing, veered across the road and collided with telephone junction box and stone wall before coming to rest on the pavement.

The female car driver was treated for neck injuries and suffered severe bruising. The male ambulance driver was treated for shock.

Both vehicles received extensive damage.

An accident investigation team were called to the scene and Caton Road was closed for four hours whilst a reconstruction was carried out.

That caused disruption with traffic being diverted through the Newton estate.

Police say they would like to speak to anyone who may have seen the accident. To help, call 01524-63333.
