CLLR Peter Robinson unfairly criticised Evelyn Archer and other Friends of the Winter Gardens in his letter published last week.

He admits that Evelyn and others have worked hard for 20 years to re-open the theatre but then suggests it's their fault, in some way, that the theatre is not yet operating as a viable business.

The battle to restore the WG has been obstructed by many difficulties but, as far as I know, none of these have been caused by Evelyn and the Friends. Can Mr Robinson prove otherwise and if not is an apology not called for?

His lapse into pettiness and silliness doesn't change the fact that he has himself worked hard for the people in the West End area for eight years, putting a great deal of effort into lobbying for funds to tackle the ward's problems and campaigning against the crime, drug abuse, yobbery, rubbish, and poverty, which obstruct the area's renewal.

He should be congratulated, for bringing to our attention the fact that sometimes charities and agencies can pursue policies that are unhelpful to Morecambe's regeneration. However, despite all this positive work, the problems in Cllr Robinson's ward are not all sorted out.

So, in this Christmas month, Mr Robinson should do unto others as ye would be done to' and judge Evelyn and the Friends by the same fair standards he'd want to be applied to his own work.

This letter is not party political. I am a Labour Party member, as is Cllr Robinson, while Evelyn belongs to a political group which I do not support.

Finally, a suggestion to Cllr Robinson. Why does he not back the campaign to keep Morecambe Town Hall on its present site. To his credit, Cllr Abbot Bryring (Labour councillor for a Lancaster ward ) has done this already.

Brian Ogston, Morecambe.
