CLEAR the air talks are planned in a bid to resolve of the future of Lancaster Musicians' Co-operative.

Co-operative representatives are to meet with members of the city council's Cabinet to find a way forward for the organisation.

The get-together follows claims that the co-op was about to be evicted from its home in Lodge Street to make way for a multi-million revamp.

For city council leader Cllr Barker says: "In fact the Cabinet decision guarantees a place for the co-op in the new development."

He denies that decisions about the future of the land have been being handed to developers Centros Miller who are to lead the refurbishment of the Canal Corridor North' area of the city.

Cllr Barker says the council, as the landowner, will retain some control.

He explains: "In 2002 a decision was made to offer the musicians a long lease. That was in the context of them attracting funding for ambitious plans for a 300-capacity venue, a caf and shops in addition to improving the existing rehearsal rooms and recording studios.

"These have not come to fruition, and clearly another way forward is now needed. That is why I have now invited the musicians to meet members of the Cabinet.

He goes on: "We all want to see the co-operative continue. I certainly see the social value of a place where aspiring rock musicians can come together, and so do my colleagues.

" I hope a meeting will clear the air and will find a way forward that we can agree on."
