ALMOST 200 people from businesses across Cumbria and north Lancashire attended an event to showcase Project Access, the ground-breaking £20 million broadband roll-out programme for the area.
The infrastructure for the ambitious programme, which is funded by the Northwest Regional Development Agency (NWDA), was successfully completed over the summer. This first phase has resulted in delivery of a high capacity wireless broadband network, which will now expand coverage to over 95 per cent of Cumbria and north Lancashire.
NWDA chief executive Steven Broomhead told the gathering the challenge was to exploit the technology to its full potential.
"This level of communications technology is making Cumbria not only an attractive place to live but also a desirable location to establish and deliver enterprise."
The meeting heard that almost one in four Cumbrians have chosen to go on-line with broadband and that take up is greater than any other part of the country.
