COMMUNITY groups could soon be hitting the airwaves thanks to a new radio station which is about to be set up in South Lakeland.
Kirkby Lonsdale has just been awarded a community radio licence, from communications authority OFCOM, and a group has been set up to provide the new radio station which will allow local people, community groups and voluntary organisations to broadcast for five years.
Paul Broadbent, a member of the group that will provide the station, said: "This is really good news for local people as this truly will be local radio for the people by the people. This radio station will reflect the interests of local people and become a central part of the community."
Community radio is new sector of radio being introduced into the UK to complement the mix of services being provided by the BBC and commercial providers.
