SUPPORTERS of a controversial wheeled sports park in Carnforth are pressing ahead with their plans after Lancaster City Council backed the development.

Cabinet members agreed that they would support a partnership with the Carnforth Area Regeneration Partnership (CARP) and the Carnforth Town Council to provide a facility for BMX, skateboard and roller blade users in the area.

They also agreed to seek funds to improve playground facilities in Dunkirk Avenue and to use the consultation strategy in any further consultation on the matter.

According to CARP representative Tony Rimmer, campaigners are keen to get the development up and running.

"We shall be having a meeting in the next few days to sort out the plans for the production of the park within the next two years which is the minimum amount of time needed to raise funds.

"It is now down to us to prepare the proposals because the original funding has been lost," he said.

Cabinet originally vetoed the decision after ward councillors and local residents objected to the development of the park at the Dunkirk Avenue site.

However, the overview and scrutiny committee criticised the lack of clarity in the consultation process, the lack of involvement of young people in the process and the loss of external funding due to last-minute decision making and proposed that Cabinet reconsider its decision.
