RESIDENTS in Skerton are digging in to grow more of their own fruit and vegetables.

Local people are working to turn the abandoned Tan Hill allotments site turned back into plots for cultivation.

The site (pictured) has not been used as allotments since 1996 but is still reserved by Lancaster City Council for use as garden plots.

Now, with allotments back in fashion and a waiting list for space on some of the city's 12 sites, locals are taking matters into their own hands.

They have the backing of Joy Grayson, the city's environmental co-ordinator, who has just taken on the role of developing allotments.

She says: "They are a great community resource and at Tan Hill we are encouraging local people to look at innovative ways of using the land for community food growing projects."
