ST MARY'S Church, Crosthwaite, was filled to capacity for the funeral of Mary Myers. She was born in 1915 and celebrated her 90th birthday with family and friends. She moved to Crosthwaite at an early age and remained there all her life.
On leaving school, she taught piano for some years. Her wedding to Jack took place in 1940 and they farmed for most of their long marriage.
Gardening was also important and they were well-known for their home-grown produce. They entered the Crosthwaite Flower Show and won cups for the most points for many years.
Canon Bill Greetham, who conducted the service, praised Mary for her total commitment to St Mary's. She had been in the church choir for 80 years; a past president of the WI where she was a member for 76 years; and also a founder member and past president of the Cameo Club and Luncheon Club.
The village was important to Mary, and she was a parish councillor for many years and also a trustee of the Crosthwaite and Lyth District Nurses' Trust. Because of her service, she was invited to open the local recreation field and also the recently-refurbished Argles Memorial Hall.
Mary loved watching sport and was a member of both the outdoor and indoor bowling clubs where she was the only woman to win the indoor trophy. She is survived by her husband and two great-grand children.
