SAMMY McIlroy aims to push Morecambe FC to the brink of the Football League after stepping into the Christie Park hot seat while manager Jim Harvey recovers from his heart attack.
The 51-year-old Ulsterman and former Manchester United legend has been handed the role on a caretaker basis while his 47-year-old fellow countryman Harvey recuperates after suffering a heart attack shortly before last Saturday's Conference defeat to Cambridge United.
McIlroy, who will be assisted by the vastly experienced Mark Lillis, is more than happy to help his friend Harvey out and says: "I was shocked when I heard about Jim and it only took me about 10 minutes to decide to come and help him out.
"I will do anything to help out and I will speak to Jim and keep him involved.
"I am very impressed by Morecambe FC and their attitude and I look forward to pushing the club towards the League in time for Jim to return."
Harvey, who assisted McIlroy when he was Northern Ireland boss, is expected to be away from the game for at least three months on medical advice.
McIlroy has been out of the game since October last year when he was controversially sacked by Stockport County.
Lillis, the former Halifax Town manager, is one of the most qualified coaches in the British game and he adds: "I am really excited about this challenge.
"It is a very professionally run club and the people involved are football people and that is always important."
