IN LIGHT of Mrs Sutcliffe's increasingly bizarre weekly updates on her objections to the proposals for a rejuvenated paddling pool at Happy Mount Park, the time has come to defend the plans and add a bit of common sense to the debate.
I have two children aged eight and three who would love a modernised aqua park.
We are not talking here about a dangerous onslaught of high-powered water jets which would blast the children from all angles and wash them into the bay, but about creating an imaginative, exciting, enjoyable and fun place for children in the summer... and one that can be maintained cheaper than the existing pool.
Mrs Sutcliffe expresses her concerns that young children will become distressed by being splashed by the water... well in that case don't take them to a paddling pool!
I've seen children running through the water of the pool creating more of a splash than the proposed water jets would! It comes with the territory.
Besides, I rather think the new plans have been designed with fun and enjoyment for all ages in mind, including the younger paddlers who on the most part would enjoy splashing around on a hot summer's day.
It is the parents' responsibility to keep an eye on their children and if they are clearly not enjoying being splashed then maybe they shouldn't be at the pool in the first place!
Mrs Sutcliffe's attempts to whip the local community into a frenzy of objections against these plans appear to have overlooked the simple fact that, although there are undoubtedly some people against the proposals, the majority of those with children agree that a free modern aquatic attraction in Morecambe is a fantastic idea!
I know my two children will certainly be some of the first in line to enjoy the new pool and I don't suppose for one minute that I'll have to be wiping up any tears if they happen to get splashed by a rogue jet of water.
Miss S Walker, Morecambe.
