DRINKERS could face hefty fines for alcohol-related disorder under a new police clampdown.
Alcohol-related problems are being targeted to tackle issues including anti-social behaviour, crime, and motoring offences.
Extra officers are to patrol town centres across the county, particularly on Friday and Saturday nights, to combat problems in a campaign timed to coincide with the introduction of new licensing laws on November 24.
Drinkers guilty of inappropriate behaviour' could be hit with an £80 fixed penalty fine, warns licensing reform co-ordinator Chf Insp Jon Donnelly.
He says: "The message we are sending out loud and clear to louts is very simple. Disorderly behaviour could result in an £80 on-the-spot fine while drunkenness will result in arrest first and a fine later.
"The majority of people want to be able to enjoy a night out without drunken louts ruining it. By taking this robust action against people who abuse alcohol we will ensure that responsible drinkers and others can enjoy their evening."
