THE Lake District could become a tourist stop off point for cruise ships within two years, according to an agency responsible for regeneration in Cumbria.
Plans to redevelop to turn a disused part of Barrow docks into a marina with 24 hour access, new modern housing and businesses could come to fruition by 2007 according to Westlakes Renaissance regeneration manager Mike Baker.
Speaking at the Morecambe Bay Partnership AGM, Mr Baker outlined plans to redevelop the old Ramsden Dock at Barrow.
"We would use the whole of Cumbria as a package to draw people to the area including the Lake District, coastlines and the rich heritage we have in the county,"
Westlakes Renaissance has been involved in several high profile projects in West Cumbria including the regeneration of the Whitehaven waterfront.
Mr Baker said that an application for funding had been made to the North West Development Agency and, if it was forthcoming, the project could be completed by the end of 2007.
