Vale of Lune's run in the Powergen Intermediate Cup ended at the second round stage against North 1 side Caldy, who ended the home side's five game unbeaten run.
In a hard fought tie the outcome was in the balance until the final whistle with the Vale pounding the visitor's line in a dramatic five minute period of injury time.
The tempo was high throughout with the Vale taking an early lead with an Andrew Garnett penalty goal.
Two Caldy penalties were answered by a superb long range penalty from Garnett but the team from the Wirral turned round at the interval holding an 11-6 lead, following an unconverted try in injury time.
Caldy went further ahead in the 55th minute with a converted try. Vale's impressive fight back started with a third Garnett penalty and a well worked try.
The Vale pack bossed their opponents close to the Caldy line. Simon Baines made the break from the base of the scrum, his fellow forwards drove him for the line but it was prop Dan Bowles who claimed the try, converted by Garnett.
A final Caldy penalty forced the Vale to go all out for a winning score, a situation that ensured an exciting climax to a splendid contest, but the home side were unable to successfully break down a Caldy defence that hung on to victory.
