GAY weddings are coming to Lancaster and the city's landmark Ashton Memo-rial is set to host one of the area's first in January.
The Civil Partnership Act comes into force early in December and on December 21 the first legal partnerships can be formed between same sex couples.
A spokesman for Lancaster City Council says: "We haven't got any booked in or had any enquiries for Lancaster Town Hall but the Ashton Memorial has got a provisional booking for one in January and the registrar's office has several booked in, though we don't know what venues these would be for."
A couple become civil partners when they sign the civil partnership register in the presence of two witnesses and the civil partnership Registrar.
A civil partnership registration must take place in a register office or on approved premises.
The formation of a civil partnership can be complimented by a personalised cere-mony if desired and a variety of options are provided by the Registration Service.
The Civil Partnership Act gives same sex couples the opportunity to obtain legal recognition of their relationship and they are set to become popular throughout the UK.
Ceremonies by Anglican priests blessing lesbian and gay partnerships increased by 10 per cent in 2003 to 300 in England alone.
