STUDENTS at two Kendal schools have been putting their green-fingered skills to good use as part of a community project.
Members of the Queen Katherine School's Prince's Trust Group and pupils from Sandgate School for disabled children are redeveloping the garden at Meadow View Nursery on Appleby Road.
The regeneration of the garden is part of the Prince's Trust Excel project, which requires participants to undertake a community-based initiative.
Citizenship tutor at Queen Katherine School Tasha Jones believes that the students are excited and enthusiastic about the project.
She said: "The 19 year 11 students have plans to replace the greenhouse which they are hoping to get sponsorship for; to have a seated area, a vegetable patch and a compost area. They received a group award from the Prince's Trust to produce an ICT-based project about the community garden.
"We want them to fully understand the seed to plate process of growing food from the ground," she said.
Students from Sandgate School are helping out as part of an accredited course with which they are involved. Sandgate teacher Sara Wilson said that students had to choose a community project as part of the module.
"When we found out that Queen Katherine were doing this project we decided to offer our help," she said.
"It has been hands on but the students have been more than willing to get their hands dirty and help out."
Anyone wishing to get involved or donate equipment, money or plants should contact Tasha Jones at Queen Katherine School on 01539-773640.
