LANCASTER - a city known for fine architecture and beautiful, classically designed buildings.

But now the capital of the Red Rose county is earning notoriety for its newer buildings... and people want to see at least two of them flattened.

The Infolab complex at the university and the city centre police station should be bulldozed, according to locals.

Galgate resident Stephen Booth describes Infolab as a very large and overpowering luminous green and orange neo brutalist gerbil box' which towers over Ellel and Galgate from the top of the university hill.

"It stands out from the surrounding countryside and has been designed with absolutely no feeling whatsoever for the surrounding area, he says."

And he has written to Oxford Television, mak-ers of the forthcoming Channel Four series 'Demolition', suggesting that the buil-ding be wiped from the face of the earth.

Programme spokesman Emily Sevenoaks says: "We are about more than just pointing out eyesores, we're trying to get people to think about the quality of the built environment.

"We hope that people will realise that they can influence the quality of the place that they live in and that it's important to voice their concerns over bad buildings."

When told of the nomination of Lancaster police station, Lancashire Constabulary's property services manager Steve Hodkinson says: "When Lancaster police station was built it was state of the art - it was what people built in the 60s.

"The police station is very practical and is just what we need. I wouldn't suppose that Channel 4 would offer us the millions of pounds we would need to build a new police station on the same site."

But at Lancaster University, a po-faced spokesman says: "InfoLab21 is a landmark building which has captured public attention both regionally and nationally. It is an important regional centre for top-quality research and enterprise situated on the southern edge of the University campus, facing out over the M6 motorway.

"Its distinctive design reflects the university's vision to create a major new information and communications technology facility on campus and engage with business throughout the North West.

"The building has been nominated for two Royal Institute of British Architecture design awards. It also achieved a Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method ( BREEAM) excellence award."

People can nominate the ugliest buildings they know by logging on to www.channel4.com/demolition or by calling 09013-263200.
