LITTER has become a major problem for all the suburbs of Morecambe.

Many of the streets and hedgerows are an absolute disgrace yet the powers-that-be seem oblivious to the fact that there is a problem.

I would suggest that they move out of their cosy offices and tour the area to see for themselves what is not only an eyesore but a health hazard.

If the numerous wardens we see touring the centre of the resort were half as diligent in dealing with litter louts as they are with checking parked cars I am sure there would be a vast improvement.

What we need are regular patrols in the evenings and at weekends when most of the litter is thrown around and a spate of hefty fines for the offenders. Together those measures would drive home the message that this behavious is not acceptable.

Recycling areas should also be serviced more often because the one on the William Mitchell pub car park is often filled to overflowing long before it is emptied. Twice in the past I have called the local authority to inform them of this problem.

Many locals will know that Morecambe is already the favourite butt for many comedians let's not also move to the top of the table for the scruffiest town.
