THE Yorkshire Dales National Park Authority has welcomed news that it is to receive more cash from the Government to look after the region in the coming year.

Rural Affairs minister Alun Michael announced that the YDNPA would receive £4,906,870 from April an increase of £320,000 on last year.

YDNPA head of finance and resources Richard Burnett said it would be especially welcome with the implementation of the Countryside and Rights of Way Act 2000 later this year.

"At present, the public only has open access' to four per cent of the national park but, from May, that figure will rise to 63 per cent," he said.

"The money will help us to ensure that this major change is introduced smoothly and managed effectively for the benefit of residents and visitors to the park alike."

The YDNPA will also receive £200,000 for the Sustainable Development Fund, which helps support local communities, jobs and the environment. The total grant for national parks across the country for 2005/06 is £42.13 million.
