KIRKBY Stephen's main public toilets are to be closed at night due to the increasing problem of vandalism.

A letter from Eden District Council confirmed the Stoneshot public conveniences will close at night because it could not cover the costs of the damage being caused.

Community police officer Roly Earl said just shy of £2,000 worth of damage had been caused in the last year and short of being in attendance 24 hours a day there was little else that could be done.

Chairman of Kirkby Stephen Town Council Coun Alex Birtles said it was a sorry state of affairs: "These particular public conveniences given Kirkby Stephen's location, are very important to a lot of through traffic. It is important to emphasise that we must strive to keep them open overnight once the review takes place."

The toilets will be closed from 6.30pm until 8am and a review of the closure will take place before Easter.
