I WOULD like to thank readers who responded to my letter in regard to plans to introduce a residents' parking scheme for the Bowerham and Primrose areas of Lancaster. But we need more if we are to fight this issue.

I received a fair number of e-mail's agreeing with me and supporting a campaign and some disagreeing but requesting something be done about the number of cars parking in areas around St Martin's College.

I would say that 80 per cent of people in the area do not believe we should have to pay to park outside our houses.

I have also received a letter from the council informing me just how many people have requested this parking scheme. I won't mention any figures but I'm positive that with a little bit of effort we can show an almighty opposition to it.

The council says this scheme will be non-profit making but I have counted the properties in the Primrose area alone, and if each of them were to buy a permit the council would receive revenue in the region of £17,500. I haven't completed the Bowerham count yet, but I'm guessing the total revenue could be in the region of £30,000.

I was also given several reasons as to why the college car park plan was turned down but I find the run up of events to this scheme somewhat suspicious in their nature.

First, there has always been a problem with the number of cars being parked on the streets by students attending St Martin's. But it has never been a real problem until recently.

So the College applies to the council for permission to build a car park but is refused. What does the College do it begins to charge the students to park on the campus car parks.

This drives even more students to park on the streets, thus creating more problems. And to stop this happening the council comes up with a scheme to charge residents to park.

Please e-mail your opposition to SKelly4033@aol.com and pass on the address to friends and neighbours so they too can respond. We can at least prove that this scheme is not wanted.
