THE decision to put the needs of residents before a glittering political career has earned Morecambe and Lunesdale MP Geraldine Smith a top prize.

Ms Smith beat off competition from other outspoken MPs to be named as Channel 4's Campaigning Politician of 2005' last night (Tuesday).

She beat former sports minister Kate Hoey, who rebelled against the Government over the Hunting Bill, and Adam Price - the Plaid Cymru MP who accused Tony Blair over his intentions in Iraq - in a poll among MPs.

The long battle battle for a Gangmasters Bill to regulate the cockling industry and her work pushing for regeneration in Morecambe swung it her way.

Ms Smith says: "It is important to gain respect from all sides of the House of Commons and you can only do that by speaking your mind and doing what you think is best for constituents.

"A choice has to be made between a political career where you have to be loyal and toe the Party line or speaking out for constituents. I have chosen the latter path."

She adds: "I'm delighted and it's nice to be recognised for campaigning, which is something I have done since I came into politics.

"I like to get stuck in and have a go because there is no point in being in politics if you don't try to make a difference.

"At the end of the day politics is about people and if they have issues I will try and help."

But the campaign champion says it can be frustrating' at times, adding: "To run an effective campaign you need to have patience especially when it comes to long-drawn-out issues like the M6 link road.

"I like working with people and really enjoy my job and so it is great to be recognised."
