A CLEAR commitment to race harmony is to be made by Lancaster and Morecambe schools.

Civic and school leaders are to launch a Race Equality Charter for the district next month.

Copies of the document committing to guaranteed racial equality will be framed and displayed in all schools following a launch ceremony to be held at The Platform in Morecambe on Friday March 4.

Adoption of the Charter means that schools will have clear procedures for dealing with racist incidents and will adopt a curriculum aimed at developing knowledge, understanding and an appreciation of ethnic and cultural diversity Cllr John Whittaker says: "The Charter is a public declaration of commitment to fairness.

"Lancashire schools already have a good record at treating children equally but adopting this Charter means schools are stating publicly that racism is unacceptable.

"It is a lesson that children are happy to learn."
