I WAS intrigued to receive through the post a leaflet from James Airey, the Conservative prospective parliamentary candidate for Morecambe & Lunesdale, as I do not live in the constituency.
Among the various promises being offered is to secure a long-term future for Heysham nuclear power station'. What does he mean the two nuclear reactors at Heysham are reaching the end of their safe working lives and are due to be decommissioned over the next 15 years.
Is he suggesting that they should be kept working beyond their safe working life or that the Heysham site be used for the new generation of power stations that the nuclear industry is keen to promote?
Nuclear power is being touted in many quarters as the solution to combating climate change. Whoever wins the election we will see the nuclear industry lobbying to build new power stations at existing sites.
This will be despite the fact that no long term solution has been found for radioactive waste, that nuclear facilities will be high profile targets for terrorist attacks and that nuclear power is far more costly than the available alternatives.
British Energy is currently bankrupt and it is only the taxpayer that is keeping it going. The local Conservatives should stop hiding behind vague, sweeping statements and come clean on their promises Cllr Chris Coates, Green group leader, Lancaster City Council
