RELAXED licensing laws, which could lead to pubs and clubs opening their doors to drinkers 24 hours a day, will lead to more violence, more vandalism and drain the purses of the public and police in South Lakeland, Westmorland and Lonsdale MP Tim Collins has claimed.
Mr Collins condemned the Licensing Act 2003, saying it would result in an "explosion" in late night drinking which will bring misery to scores of residents who live near licensed premises.
He spelt his intention to block the law, which has received barrages of criticism by signing a special House of Commons Motion aimed at blocking the law that comes into effect on Monday, February 7.
"Those who support an extension in drinking hours across South Lakeland say that people who want to stagger out of pubs in the early hours of the morning just want to enjoy themselves, but what about those in nearby streets who just want to sleep?" said Mr Collins.
"I share the concerns of senior police officers, judges and church officials that 24 hour drinking would simply lead to more violence, more vandalism and more costs for public and police alike."
