FOOTBALL: Carvetii United beat the frost that caused widespread cancellation of fixtures in the Talbot Insurance Westmorland League on Saturday and ran out 3-1 winners at Carleton Rovers Reserves.
Third Division leaders Carvetii, enjoyed a bright opening spell with the hard pitch just about taking a stud before Carleton began to even out the exchanges.
Then, just before half time, Carvetii centre-forward Gary Trewhitt broke the deadlock, running clean through on to a ball into the box to slot his shot under the keeper.
Carleton's first-team game had been postponed and they had strengthened their second team with a few players from the senior squad, which made it an interesting contest and they pressed hard for 20 minutes of the second half.
Carvetii's defence contained the threat well, however, and they went 2-0 up when in-form Trewhitt was picked out again to score his second.
Carleton's attempts to release their quick forwards with balls over the top were finally rewarded when they pulled a goal back, but Carvetii's top scorer Dan Robinson - dropped back into midfiel - killed off the comeback with a 25-yard screamer into the top of the net with 10 minutes remaining.
Carvetii, seeking a quick return to the Second Division after relegation last season, are now 16 points clear at the top from Shap, who have six matches in hand, making the fixture between the sides later potentially the key one to the title.
Results: Division 1, High Sheriff's Cup, first round: Coniston 5, Windermere 0. Division 2: Kirkoswald 1, Lunesdale United 0; Windermere SC Res 2, Dent 6. Division 3: Carleton Rovers Res 1, Carvetii Utd 3. All other games postponed.
