THE 2005 Northern Cricket League will kick off on April 16 with clubs hoping for a long, hot summer.
But while the on-field action doesn't start until the heady days of spring, the action off the field begins tonight (Thursday) at the league's annual meeting.
The meeting at Chorley Cricket Club is likely to see matches reduced to 100 overs, although bonus points and draws will remain in place.
League secretary John Cooper told the Citizen: "I expect that to go through because the clubs have already voted in principle for the idea.
"There will be a maximum of 52 overs in the first innings if time allows and a minimum of 48 in the second."
The league this season should also see a repeat of the successful 20/20-style cup competition.
"It was popular last year and, weather permitting, we hope to repeat it," says Cooper.
On the playing front, both Morecambe and Lancaster will be looking to improve on last year's efforts.
Morecambe finished fourth, while Lancaster were second from bottom but aim to enjoy 2005.
The opening games see Morecambe hosting Leyland Motors with Lancaster on their travel to St Annes.
Morecambe travel to Netherfield on St George's Day (April 23) with Lancaster getting the chance to put their pads up with an open date after just one game, while it's derby day on Monday, May 30 as the local rivals go head to head at Woodhill Lane.
The second derby of the season takes place at Lune Road on Monday, August 29.
The season finishes on September 10 with Lancaster at Leyland Motors and Morecambe home to Darwen.
